VacancyVV10002 Name of position Citizen advocate What's on offer Do you believe in social justice? Do you believe in everyone’s inherent right to live a regular life in the community? If you are 18 years or older you may wish to become a Volunteer Citizen Advocate! Citizen Advocacy aims to empower intellectually disabled people by linking them with individuals from the local community. Roles vary considerably and include being a spokesperson, providing friendship and ensuring community inclusion. Volunteer skills/qualities Volunteers are matched based on a range of various areas such as skills, attributes, personality and location. Volunteers need to be able to work relatively independently, take initiative, be proactive, be able to communicate with people using a range of verbal and non-verbal communication techniques (support provided) and be patient. Times and days Times are flexible to meet the lifestyles of volunteers and their partners. Minimum commitment period A minimum commitment of 12 months is preferred as it takes time to build a relationship with a person and then support them to stand up for their rights. Police check required? Yes, at no cost to the volunteer, along with one professional and one personal referee.
