(Doncare Angels for Women), an innovative program linking volunteers (Angels) to women recovering from the impact of family violence. Location of role Clients live in the city of Manningham and surrounding municipalities. Volunteer duties Volunteers act as companions by assisting women with everyday activities and by providing them with emotional support for up to 12 months. Examples of support that an Angel may offer include; • Accompanying women to court and other essential appointments • Going out for coffee or lunch • Visiting the woman at home • Going to a movie • Going for a walk • Other leisure activities Volunteer skills/qualities DAWN Angels are women (25 years and older) who are able to demonstrate compassion and understanding without judgement. Volunteers can provide a range of support and will be matched according to interest and availability. Times and days Volunteers operate on weekdays and provide a minimum of one hour support each week. This is flexible, depending on need and days and times are negotiable. Minimum commitment period There is a minimum commitment period of 12 months and volunteers are matched with the woman they are supporting for that 12 month period. Training and support Volunteers complete an application form that can be obtained from the DAWN coordinator, volunteers are interviewed and, if successful, are invited to attend a 2 day training program prior to involvement in the program. No Formal qualifications are required. Volunteers are also asked to attend monthly meetings where ongoing training and support is provided. Training will take place at Doncare (8 Montgomery Street, Doncaster East). Support will be offered within the client’s home. Police check required Yes, at no cost to the volunteer. More information To minimize risk to volunteers, a thorough risk assessment of the woman’s home situation is conducted prior to clients being accepted into the program. |
