These positions facilitate the opportunity for elderly isolated seniors who are still living in independent living accommodation to access Social Support activities by providing volunteer support. The Program runs Social Support Activity Groups at various times and venues such as local cafes, light walking, men's lunch groups, a Chinese Walking Group, a Library Group at Doncaster Library etc. Volunteer duties In this role you would facilitate activities for older people; provide practical support and encouragement to participants and enable them to be actively involved in the activity of their choice. The aim is to empower participants to contribute to the organisation and development of the activity and to support participants to maintain control of their own decision-making. Volunteers monitor the needs of the participants reporting any concerns you may have to the Social Support team listed above; collect transport fees and help organise the payment of participant’s consumables at the group. This will involve a small amount of maths skill as many venues no longer split the bill. There is a requirement to complete documentation (Activity Report); attend Social Support meetings and training and assist in the orientation of new volunteers. Volunteer skills/qualities No formal Qualifications are required, however Social Support Volunteers will have: • Respect for older people and their individuality, enjoyment of their company. • An ability to encourage older people’s independence. • Good listening skills. • A willingness to undertake training to enhance skills. • A willingness to work as part of a team. Times and days Mutually agreed during interview. Training and support It is optional but highly recommended that you would undertake educational sessions provided through the Home and Community Care Program that would assist in dealing with elderly clients.
