What does an Independent Person do? An Independent Person is a volunteer who is independent of the Criminal Justice System and supports young people during interviews with Police when a parent or guardian is unavailable. The Independent Person then refers young people to support services to reduce their chances of future offending. Independent Persons are trained comprehensively in relevant Police and legal processes as well as in working with indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse young people. To volunteer and make a difference, you'll need to be committed and over 18 years of age, with your own transport and phone. You'll also need good communication skills, an openess to diversity and other people's values, and a willingness to be challenged and to learn. |
