About the agency In 1951, AMES began providing English to new settlers in Australia. Since then, more than half a million students have attended AMES programs and services. AMES has grown to provide settlement, education and employment services to our culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) clients.

Volunteers This is a home-based program where the volunteer English language tutor visits their student at home to help them learn English and generally understand the Australian way of life. No previous teaching experienced or a second language is required. Tutoring can take place during the day, evening or at weekends.

The commitment is to visit your student once a week for 1 to 2 hours for a minimum of 6 months.

A training course of 15 hours over a six week period, and ongoing workshops and social functions are provided for the tutors. Training is held regularly in both Box Hill and Glen Waverley.

There are also volunteer opportunities for Settlement Volunteers
